If you read this blog often, you know about the  Silver Scream Spookshow. I can’t seem to talk about it enough. Although I’ve never been, it sounds like such a great, uniquely Atlanta kind of thing to do.

The Silver Scream Spookshow begins with a half hour variety show featuring Professor Mortes and his side kick Retch. Georgia Public Broadcasting did a video of the show that gives you a good idea of what to expect. You can view it here. According to the Spookshow website, the show is a cross between “Pee Wee Herman’s Playhouse” and “The Munsters” and features magic tricks, dance numbers and a little spooking. Once the audience is sufficiently warmed up, they show a classic horror film. This month is Carnival of Souls.

Looking for something for the little kids? The Plaza Theatre also offers Mr. Greggy’s Silly Circus and a kid friendly movie (more on that next week!). If you like your movies early in the morning, try Flapjacks and a Flick or if FREE movies are more your thing, here’s a list of FREE outdoor movies in Atlanta this summer.

This morning was a fun one on CBS Better Mornings Atlanta, I met Shane, of Shane’s Rib Shack. Shane’s supports my son’s local baseball program, so it was nice to have the opportunity to say thanks in person. In addition, I had a delicious breakfast of ribs. You can get your own free ribs too! Be one of the first 100 people to visit Shane’s Rib Shack on Sat. May 15 and receive a 1/2 rack of ribs, large beverage and a Shaniac t-shirt.

Thanks to Atlanta on the Cheap for introducing me to the Little Shop of Stories on the Decatur Square. Although I haven’t made it out there yet, it’s now on my list of things to do. We’ve missed Rick Riordan twice now, but there always seems to be a great event coming up. Next is a book signing with Julie Andrews.

Julie Andrews, best known for her screen performances in Mary Poppins, The Sound of Music and most recently The Princess Diaries will be signing her newest book The Very Fairy Princess. This is a ticketed event. Tickets are free, but must be secured on May 16. The Little Shop of Stories Blog has an entire post detailing the procedure. The short version, there are 185 tickets, come on May 16 to secure a ticket and purchase a book. Then line up on May 21st to get your book signed.

Spring has settled in nicely and Summer is just around the corner, so who can blame you if the idea of cooking in a warm kitchen becomes less appealing as the temperature rises. Where do you go when you have kids anxious to eat and no idea what to cook? Check out Vintage Pizzeria in Chamblee! Located in a non-descript building of condos, this local pizzeria is a big favorite of families all over the area.

There is a family side and an over 18 side, divided by a large bar, so you don’t have to worry if your kids are a little loud during the meal, everyone around you will have kids. Their pizzas range from the unusual, like the blue pie, with blue cheese and buffalo sauce (a spicy favorite in our house!), Hawaiian pizza and BBQ pizza, to the traditional cheese and pepperoni. For those who want something a little less cheesy, there are pasta and salad dishes to choose from as well. While most of the seating is inside there are a few tables outside, so get there early to snag one of those!

Don’t fill up on pizza, because the best part comes after – head across the street to The Frosty Caboose, a repurposed caboose train, and get some local Greenwood ice cream, which has been produced in Chamblee for over 50 years! Located right on the train track so you can sit and watch the trains go by, and a stones throw away from the Peachtree Dekalb Airport, so you can also see planes as they are coming in for a landing. With that much excitement who needs to go anywhere else?
