Hockey fans, here’s a great way to see your favorite Thrashers players up close for FREE. Thrashers practice sessions on non-game days are held at the Ice Forum in Duluth. These sessions are free and open to the public. (practice sessions at Philips Arena are closed to the public) The ice times below are approximate and sometimes the practices are preceded by a video session, so the players may not be on the ice until 20-30 minutes after the posted practice time. Regardless, what a great way to see the players up close. This year there are some Saturday practices too.

The Atlanta Thrashers making a push for the playoffs this week and they want to pack the house. So, they’re offering fantastic deals on seats for the March 23 and 25 games. Here are five easy steps to ordering your tickets:

What: Kids Day at the Atlanta Thrashers

Who isn’t a hockey fan after watching the US Olympic team go into overtime against Canada. Not exactly the outcome we were looking for, but I’m sure it’s inspired more than a few kids to strap on skates, rollerblades, or just a pair of socks in the hallway.

If you’d like to see some real hockey action with the kids, your in luck. The Atlanta Thrashers have two more Kid’s Days this season (kids under 12 are free with a paying adult). One is on Sunday, March 7 and the other is March 14. The games are a kid friendly 5 pm.

If you’ve got a birthday coming up, you can get a free ticket to a game through the Thrasher’s Birthday Club. Check out the Atlanta Thrashers site for other discounts.

1. Center For Puppetry Arts Museum – The Center for Puppetry Arts offers world class puppet shows and a fantastic museum of all kinds of puppets including a recently acquired collection from Jim Henson. The Henson display includes, Big Bird and Bert from Sesame Street, Kermit and the Swedish Chef from the Muppets, and others from various commercials, tv shows and movies done by Henson. The museum is FREE each Thursday from 1 – 3 pm. For a list of puppet shows, visit www.puppet.org. Here’s a glimpse of what you’ll see.
2. Imagine It! The Children’s Museum of Atlanta – The Second Tuesday of every month is Target Free Day and the Museum is free from 1 – 7 pm. Exhibits include a life-size John Deere tractor, wooden trains, moon sand station, UPS truck, water play area and more! There is also a section just for the crawling set, with soft walls, mats to climb on, over and under, musical instruments to play and even a water bed.
3. Home Depot Workshop - The first Saturday of every month, Home Depot sets aside a corner of the store for kids to hammer and glue a wooden craft. We’ve made treasure boxes, flower pots, fire engines, and airplanes to name a few. Kids get an apron and the craft they make all for free.
4. Lowes Build and Grow Workshop – On select Saturdays, Lowe’s offers kids a similar workshop to the Home Depot. Lowe’s provides all the materials, hammers and gives each child a kid sized apron. Visit the website for specific dates and projects.
5. Kids Day at the Thrashers – The Thrashers offer Kids Day where tickets are free for kids with a paying adult. Upcoming Thrashers Kids Days are March 7 and 14.
6. Fulton County Free Days at the High Museum – The first Saturday of every month, Fulton County residents can visit the High Museum of Art free. Think this isn’t a place for your toddler? Thanks to Jenn for this tidbit. Atlanta Thrashers practice sessions are free and open to the public. For school age fans, the times probably don’t mesh with your schedule, but for young fans, what a great opportunity to see your favorite hockey players up close.

For those of you that can’t make the practice sessions, you can still get good deals on tickets. This Thursday, Jan. 21, 2010 is Thrashers Thursday. All tickets in the 300 level are $15. The game is against the Hurricanes. Coming up in March are Thrashers Kid’s Days where children under 12 get in free with a paying adult

I always love to see who’s in the studio when I do the Better Mornings Atlanta segments. This morning they had Sean, a professional bull rider from Summerville, Ga. who is in town for the Professional Bull Rider’s championship at the Gwinnett Civic Center. Tickets start at $10, so if you have a hankerin for some bull, it’s very affordable.

Also in studio was the biggest cat I’ve ever seen, a siamese and a hairless sphinx from this weekend’s Cat Fanciers cat show at the Georgia International Convention Center. The sphinx was surprisingly soft, but it’s definitely a face only a mother would love. There’s just something strange about a cat with no fur.

My kids did the Atlanta Spirit’s Check it Out Reading program this summer and earned FREE Thrashers tickets. Unfortunately, the tickets were for last Sunday and we had too many things going on. I’m sure the boys will ask about the game because they look forward to going each year and so do I. I like hockey. Thank goodness I found these other great deals.

This Sunday is Thrashers Kids Day which means children under 12 are free with a paying adult. Monday was my oldest’s birthday and #2′s is in December. Thanks to the Thrasher’s Birthday Club, my boys can get a free ticket during their birthday month. If you’re birthday falls during the summer, no worries, you can still choose any game in October or November. Check out the Atlanta Thrashers site for other discounts.
