As a parent of a tween and very young teen, I’m quite excited about the Alliance Theatre is kicking off its 2011/2012 Theatre for Youth series on October 29, 2011 with The Real Tweenagers of Atlanta, Conceived and Directed by Rosemary Newcott.
The Real Tweenagers of Atlanta is an improvisational musical exploration of what it means to be a “Real Tween.” It aims to discover more about this misunderstood age group: “What makes this age group tick? What makes them funny? What makes them special? What makes them crazy? What makes them real?” The cast has been meeting, improvising and talking to hundreds of middle school kids to uncover answers to the these questions. They have incorporated these middle schoolers’ own words into the production and will bring them on stage to be part of the action.
“I have nothing but respect for what they deal with on a daily basis – from trying to find a place in the lunch room where you are free from bullies to joining the right club or surviving CRCT testing. They are an eclectic, entertaining and profound group of people,” said Newcott.
Audience members will be a part of a middle school assembly. On stage, the actors will play four student “representatives” and have been charged to conduct the assembly – leading an exploration of what it means to be a “real tweenager.” There is a “teacher advisor” who is also present onstage and sits at a keyboard. He accompanies the musical numbers that are woven through the production.
The Real Tweenagers of Atlanta is part talent show, part pep rally. Young or old, you’ll find that we’re all just a little bit tween after all. Join the Alliance for this hilarious and insightful look at the real lives of ‘tweenagers.
