What: Cloudland Canyon State Park
Where: Rising Fawn, Ga.
When: Something new throughout the year
Cost: $5 parking fee

Cloudland Canyon State Park, once known as Sittons Gulch, is one of the prettiest of Georgia’s state parks. It’s located in Georgia’s Northwest corner about half an hour from Chattanooga, TN.

This rock outcrop at Cloudland Canyon looks like a big nose to me.

Hiking at Cloudland Canyon
Hiking the rim of the canyon and exploring the rock outcrops was a fun family activity for my crew. The two waterfalls, Hemlock and Cherokee are located down in the canyon. If you only have time for one, I thought Hemlock was the more scenic, although both are beautiful. There are 600 steps down to the falls, which isn’t too bad, but remember, that means there are 600 steps back UP to the top, so pace yourself and little ones.

Camping at Cloudland Canyon
My boys loved camping in the walk-in camping area. Although you have to carry gear to the campsite, it wasn’t far from the parking lot and once set up, we liked the woods completely around us rather than sleeping close to the car. We camped on site 12 but site 16 overlooks a creek and looked like an even better choice. Site selection for the walk-in camping is first-come, first-serve, so get there early to secure a specific location. Cottages are also available on-site.

There are 600 stairs down to the waterfalls. Hard part is there are 600 more to get back up!

Walk-in campsites at Cloudland Canyon create a nice atmosphere in the woods

There is a trail from the walk-in sites to the West Rim hiking. It’s a pretty walk. At one point we crossed Daniel Creek and my youngest suggested this was a perfect place to play some Pooh Sticks. If you are unfamiliar with the Winnie-the-Pooh story, Pooh and his friends drop sticks on one side of the bridge and then race to the other to see which one comes out first. We’ve had many a fun game of Pooh Sticks on various bridges.

Things to do at Cloudland Canyon
There is a playground, disc golf and even tennis courts available at Cloudland Canyon – although the tennis courts weren’t in great shape during our visit. If you’re looking for more adventure, the Georgia Girl Guides offer wild caving tours of Sittons Cave. Tours book fast, so make a reservation before you go to make sure there is space available. Maps to Sittons Cave are available at the Ranger’s office if you want to go on your own, but I wouldn’t recommend going too far without a guide, it’s very easy to get turned around in a dark winding cave.

Wild Cave Tours are muddy, but lots of fun

If you’d rather take to the sky instead of crawling underground, try hang gliding. Lookout Mountain hang gliding, located a few minutes outside the Cloudland Canyon gate is the only hang gliding outfit between Florida and North Carolina. Reservations are required for this adventure and can be purchased through Great American Days.

Suited up for hang gliding.
Cloudland Canyon is a short half hour drive to downtown Chattanooga, TN and a great base for a Chattanooga vacation. On the way to Chattanooga, stop at the famous Rock City Gardens which is about half way between Cloudland Canyon and Chattanooga.

Get to know her with this great interview from the Pocket Ranger. I love the idea of picking up a rock from each trail you hike for a rock garden.

Each Tuesday from May 8 – June 19, the Atlanta Track Club sponsors All-Comers meets at Emory University. You can come to one meet or all of them.

Events include running races, throwing the shot put, long jump and high jump. The events are for all ages and there are different brackets for different age groups from children under 6 to adults. An aerolight plane takes riders to 2,000 feet.

Hang gliding involves soaring through the air on non motorized ‘wings’. My boys LOVED it and their first question when they hit the ground was – ‘can we go again?’ Hang gliding is one of a number of adventure experiences offered by Great American Days, an experiential gift company with adventures throughout the US with several in Georgia. Great American Days is a great place to start looking for unique experiential gifts for a mother’s day, father’s day gift or even birthdays and holidays.

Our adventure started at Lookout Mountain Hang Gliding in Rising Fawn, Ga. We spent the night camping at Cloudland Canyon State Park and headed to the hang gliding facility for a morning flight. Lookout Mountain Hang Gliding is the only hang gliding school between Florida and North Carolina. They offer a tandem experience that lasts about 20 minutes in flight, as well as a full day experience, which includes instruction, training flights and the tandem flight.

A full vest keeps you comfortable in flight.

We did a Discovery Tandem package. It wasn’t scary, in fact, I felt very safe with the flight instructor. Prior to the flight you watch a short video about hang gliding and are handed your flight passes. Each person is suited up in a full-length vest and leg straps. This holds you up in flight and probably helped to make me comfortable and feel safe in the air. Flights start on the ground in a prone position, so there is no running. Tandem riders lie next to the instructor and hold on to handles near his hips. The glider is pulled into the air by an ultralight airplane that is specifically designed to tow hang gliders. Once you reach an altitude of about 2,000 feet, the instructor lets the tow go and you are gliding through the air.

In flight they allow you to take control if you’d like and show you how to move it back and forth, stall out and gain speed. Turning the hang glider is done by shifting body weight. As someone said, it’s more relaxing than thrilling and affords gorgeous views of surrounding Lookout Mountain. Landing is smoother than I would have expected. Each hang glider has wheels to help with take off and landing.

As I mentioned, all the boys loved this, even my seven year old. Children as young as five have done the tandem flight. There is a weight limit of 250 pounds with those over 230 requiring special weather conditions. I would recommend bringing a sweatshirt and wearing jeans. We went on a clear, sunny spring day, but it was still cool up in the air.

You can’t bring a camera on the flight, although you can get some great pictures on the ground. If you want in flight pictures, purchase a package for $25. The camera is positioned on the wing and snaps periodically. Make sure to look over and get a great photo of the person’s face. Otherwise, it just looks like a random someone in the air.

For more adventures in the area, take a caving tour at Cloudland Canyon with the Georgia Girl Guides. We camped at Cloudland during our stay, but you could just as easily stay in nearby Chattanooga if you are looking for posher accommodations. We coupled this adventure with a city tour of Chattanooga and a stay at the Chattanoogan Hotel downtown.

Once you master gliding, launch off here.

Consider yourself an adventurer? Looking for something to do that’s a little out of the ordinary? Then look no further than the Georgia Girl Guides (G3) Wild Cave Tour of Sitton’s Cave in Cloudland Canyon State Park near Chattanooga.

The cave entrance. Really it's the exit, but the entrance looks just like this.

This cave tour adventure ranks up there as one of my top five field trips. It’s an experience you can’t just pick up and do on your own and it is definitely an experience. There are no neat pathways to meander here, but there are rocks to climb down, icy rivers to wade through, muddy slides and crawling on your hands and knees through what looks like a chocolate river out of Willy Wonka. Did I forget to mention the bats? Apparently there were quite a few more than normal on the day we went. I always pictured bats as large imposing vampires, not the two-inch little tufts dotting the rocky surface above us. Afterwards you’ll feel accomplished, exhilarated and have a new appreciation for the world under your feet.

Your Guides Christine Rose and Amy Ward

If you’re thinking “Oh, my goodness, you’re crazy,” then maybe you should stick to the beaten path and visit Ruby Falls in nearby Chattanooga for your caving experience. No shame in that. Ruby Falls has one of the largest underground waterfalls in the country and is truly beautiful. However, if you’d rather take the road less traveled, then read on, there are some things you should know before heading out for a trip with the Georgia Girl Guides.

You’re in good hands. Co-owners Amy Ward and Christine Rose are experienced cavers and former Ga. State Park employees. Amy is a National Cave Rescue Commission certified first responder and Christine a former park naturalist so each tour includes information about the natural environment. She’s also the mom of two young children, so she has a lot of patience with the kids. I like 3Gs approach. It felt more like going out with a friend than on a guided tour.

The two hour tour includes wading through cold underground rivers.

Tours are recommended for kids 6 and up. Know your child and maybe take the one-hour tour if you’re unsure. If you’re child doesn’t like the dark, being dirty or flinches at water, you might want to wait a little before taking them caving. There is a point where you can exit, but after that, you’re in for the duration. During the one hour tour, you’ll crawl through the mud, but you don’t go through any underground rivers.

To really experience the cave, go on the two-hour tour. If you have adventurous kids, the one-hour tour just isn’t enough, you’ll get down into the cave and have to turn back. The two hour tour includes visiting various rooms off the main path and exploring deeper into the cave.

Budget extra time. Cave tour time is calculated once you reach the cave and begin your safety talk. So the one or two hours starts when you get to the cave. The entire experience will last at least two to three hours between getting ready and cleaning up afterwards.

Tiny bats live in Sitton's Cave. They're only about two inches long and rather cute.

Knee pads and Glove are provided. Georgia Girl Guides provides you with knee pads and gloves. Make sure to get a good pair of knee pads, you will be using them.

Wear a sweatshirt or jacket. The inside of the cave is a constant 56 degrees, no matter how hot it is outside. You’ll want a sweatshirt and long pants when you go down below.

It is wet. At points you are walking up to your knees in cold water. Bring a complete change of clothes – this means down to your underwear. There is a men’s and women’s changing area in the parking lot, but there isn’t any water, so bring some so you can at least wash your hands. Bring towels too. You’ll want to dry off afterwards.

Exploring the underworld.

It is muddy. Bring a huge garbage bag or plastic container for muddy clothes. The folks with us came out looking like they had overalls on – when in fact it was just the mud from their chest to their toes. Wear clothes you don’t care about. Better yet, wear something you can just throw in the garbage afterwards and not worry about having to clean. This goes for shoes too.

There are no bathrooms. Make sure everyone in your group at least tries before leaving the registration area. There are no bathrooms in the cave, or in the parking area.

You’ll have a blast! I think what I liked most about this is what I said at the beginning. It’s like hanging out with friends who are sharing their passion and knowledge more than going on a guided tour.

Mid April is strawberry season in Georgia, but the warm winter has ripped the strawberries earlier this year. I received an email from Southern Belle Farms letting me know the strawberry patch is ready for picking.

In addition to strawberries, Southern Belle Farm has picnic tables. Bring your lunch or dinner then purchase some goodies from MiMi’s Kitchen, where you’ll find homemade pound cakes that are turned into strawberry shortcake and home churned strawberry ice cream.

You can't help but eat a few while picking!

I have not been to Southern Belle Farm for strawberries (although I believe we have been there for pumpkins in the fall). We generally visit Cottle’s you pick strawberry patch in Fayetteville. There is also a Stockbridge location.

To find other you pick strawberry farms in Georgia, visit www.pickyourown.org. Scroll down the page and you’ll see the U-pick farms by county.

While passing through St. Augustine, along the main route A1A, we happen to pass a rather large stone fort, or castle – it’s kind of a bit of both. My son, recognizing it from his social studies books, informed us that it was the only 17th Century fort still in existence in the United States. Well, of course we had to stop.

Investigating holes in the coquina from past battles.

The Castillo de San Marcos was built by the Spanish. It took more than 80 years to erect the fort which at the time, was quite innovative. The walls are thick and graduated to withstand cannons and gun fire rather than tall and thin to block arrows and catapults. A limestone mixture of shell, sand and calcite called ‘coquina’ was used for the bricks and proved to be quite good at absorbing shot from guns and cannons. A sewer system used the natural tides to wash out waste helping keep the fort sanitary.

Costumed interpreter at the Castillo de San Marcos

The fort was used by various occupants since the 1600′s. That’s a lot of history to cover. We listened to a costumed Ranger talk in the Plaza as he brought us through several hundred years and gave us an idea of what daily life was like for soldiers and other occupants. It was a story of greed, pirates, imprisonment and daily routine. Even my 7-year-old was quietly listening.

Working through the Jr. Ranger Booklet, which is available free at the gift shop.

To engage the youngest even more, we requested a free Junior Ranger book on the Castillo. The booklet is a great way to engage kids in the fort and guide discussions about the many time periods covered in a single place. It’s also a great way for adults to learn about the fort.

The Castillo seems to have strong programming with a variety of events at various times. Had we been there a day later, we would have seen them shooting the cannons (something my boys have asked to go back to see). Several Foursquare tips also mention that the Fort is amazing at night (and one says a bit spooky). To make it even better, the staff we encountered were enthusiastic, helpful and obviously enjoy what they do.

We went on a cool October day, but remember this is Florida, so summers can be quite hot, bring lots of sunscreen and stay hydrated. There is limited metered parking in front of the Castillo. It’s central Downtown location is also a great home base for a tour of St. Augustine. On our list for next time, in addition to a return visit to the Castillo, is the Pirate Museum, Gator Zoo and the Government House Museum.

Gear is included in the family night price.

Each week, Atlanta Rocks, a climbing gym off I-75, hosts family night. It’s a great active night out with the kids, especially if you have multiple age ranges. My boys are between 7 and 14; I enjoyed seeing them contemplate the walls and determine what route they were going to climb. Each one was challenged, but not frustrated. There is so much to do in Atlanta with smaller kids, it is nice to find something that engaged and excited my tween and teen, but also kept the attention of my youngest. Family night prices include shoes and the harness. You only need to bring socks for the climbing shoes.

Getting instruction from our guide Ashley before heading up the wall

Bouldering walls allow climbing without a rope or belay

Atlanta Rocks has more than 12,000 square feet of professionally designed climbing surfaces. There are 50 top-rope stations, some with auto-belays, which means the safety straps you clip onto gently let you down to the floor if you fall or after reaching your destination. These walls are a great way to warm up. Belay walls require a staffer or someone trained to belay the rope that straps to your harness. If you have someone belay trained in your group, you’ll be free to move about the gym. If not, no worries, family night is supervised by Atlanta Rocks staff and they belay participants, usually in groups of six. Bouldering rocks allow those waiting to be belayed the chance to try their climbing skills without ropes. Bouldering is allowed up to shoulder height and doesn’t require a staff or trained support person.

Some upside down bouldering.

Couple of notes on the different walls. The auto belays are generally the easier climbs. You can use these to work up to more difficult walls like 14 where the rock jets out. Climb 10 allows you to swing out from the wall if you can’t climb up the entire way – a fun exercise for my youngest and a big challenge to avoid swinging for my oldest.

Swinging off Climb 10 is popular with kids. My son was challenged to make it around the outcrop.

Determining the route for the next climb. Guide sheets explain the difficulty of various routes.

Ashley, our guide, was a great help. She steered us to the right walls for our ability and challenged us to various routes. She even instructed us on climbing, showing us how to lean into the corners for a good grip. We also needed her help to read the guides around the gym, basically a sheet of paper with the various routes and difficulty level. The guide corresponds to colored holds on the wall. Using the same colored holds is more difficult than just using the closest hold available. Colored tape on the holds gives instructions for the more experienced climbers who can read them, I could never figure out what route the tape was taking.

A view from the top!

Atlanta Rocks Family Night is fun for tweens, teens, children and parents!

Family Night is a perfect way to test your group’s interest in climbing. If they love it, have someone get certified to belay and you can come anytime. Weekends are busiest, so if you have a belayer in the group, you won’t have to wait for a staffer to belay. Atlanta Rocks offers a Family Climbing Class for a flat fee of $50 per family. After the course, anyone over the age of 12 can take the belay test to belay other climbers. Always make a reservation to climb or call ahead to be sure there is space.
