Five Free Things to do in Atlanta with Kids

Noah's Ark

This morning on CBS Better Mornings Atlanta we met Popeye from Noah’s Ark. Noah’s Ark Animal Rehabilitation Center is one of the many free activities featured in Field Trips w/Sue’s book 100+ Free Things to do in Atlanta.

In less than a month, my children, like many in Georgia, will be out of school for the summer. It’s time to begin planning those lazy summer days by the pool and mixing in a few activities to get the kids away from the TV and video games. All you need to know to have a fun, and affordable summer is in the Field Trips with Sue book 100+ Free Things to do in Atlanta (hint: order online here). This morning on CBS Better Mornings Atlanta, I talked about a few of my favorite entries in the book and how you can have fun with the kids this summer for free.

April brings strawberry season in Georgia

What: Stawberry Picking in Atlanta
Where: See locations below
When: Mid-April through Early June

When I was younger, the best part about April was my birthday. Now that I’m older (or maybe it’s just old), April means strawberry picking and tasting those deliciously sweet bits of heaven as you fill up your bucket. Here are a few tips for strawberry pickers and several locations for strawberry picking close to Atlanta. Be sure to call the farm before heading out to pick. Some farms get picked out or are closed for ripening on any given day, so it’s best to be sure before you go. Have a favorite place not on this list? Let us know in the comment section.

What to do with Kids at the NCAA Final Four in Atlanta

Final Four in Atlanta

There are lots of fun family friendly events going on Downtown for the Final Four, even if you don’t have game tickets.

March Madness is in full swing and the NCAA Final Four in Atlanta is just a few short days away. Regardless of whether you have tickets for the games, there are a lot of fun basketball related activities for the whole family throughout the weekend. Here are five reasons to attend the NCAA Final Four in Atlanta with Kids:

1. The Harlem Globetrotters. Nuf said.
2. Championship college basketball games – FREE! Don’t have tickets for the Division I championship, consider watching the Division II and III championship games. It’s free.
3. Bracket Town Ultimate Final Four Fan Fest. 300,000 feet of family-friendly interactive sports related games. That’s all my boys need to hear.
4. Big Dance Concert Series. I love daytime music festivals and it’s a perfect time to introduce your kids to live music, without the cost because this festival is free.
5. Northwestern Mutual Road to the Final Four 5K Run. I’ve gotten into running lately and am looking for my first 5K. Besides, parking will be easier downtown this early in the morning and we can hit Bracket Town before it gets crowded.

Want more information on these events and other family friendly events taking place in Downtown for the NCAA Final Four in Atlanta, keep reading.

Five things to do St. Patrick’s Day in Atlanta with Kids

St. Patricks Day in Atlanta

A walking Irish flag closes out the 131st annual St. Patrick’s Day parade in Atlanta

What: St. Patrick’s Day in Atlanta with Kids
Where: Throughout Atlanta
When: Saturday, March 16 and Sunday, March 17, 2013

My heritage traces all over Europe and Scandinavia, however, you’d think from the way my older relatives talk that we are 100% Irish. Of course this weekend, everyone is Irish.

Forget Valentine’s Day. My kids love St. Patrick’s Day in Atlanta. For starters, they get their very own box of Lucky Charms. Then there’s Lucky, our Leprechaun who visit each year and is inseparable from my youngest until he goes back to Ireland on March 18. Our favorite activity is the St. Patrick’s Day party we attend each year. Although none of us are particularly fond of corn beef, boiled potatoes or soda bread, it’s a must on March 17.  There’s always a party on St. Patrick’s Day in Atlanta and here are some family friendly options for you and your little leprechauns to enjoy.
