Swim with Whale Sharks at the Georgia Aquarium

Swim with Whale Sharks

Swim with the Whale Sharks at the Georgia Aquarium

Guest Post by Liz Engle
One word to describe the swimming with the whale sharks as part of the Georgia Aquarium’s Journey with the Gentle Giants -  Incredible!

Whether you’re an avid diver or– like me– a never-even-gone-snorkeling aquarium enthusiast, this experience is for you. The staff at the Aquarium are so well-trained in marine biology, ecology and the encounter experience that they really put you at ease (and get you excited) about getting into the water with some of the world’s largest animals.  Once you’re swimming, you may never want to get out.  It’s seriously that cool. Here’s what to expect. Continue reading Swim with Whale Sharks at the Georgia Aquarium

New Fantasyland on CBS Better Mornings Atlanta

Walt Disney World

The Grand Opening Festivities for New Fantasyland at Walt Disney World

This morning was a Field Trips with Sue morning on CBS Better Mornings Atlanta and we talked about some of the major changes at Walt Disney World’s New Fantasyland. Here’s a recap.

The first Field Trips with Sue segment (click the link to see the segment) was about the Re-imagined test track and the new Splitsville Bowling Lanes.

  • Re-Imagined Test Track: What could be better than swerving through ice and snow and barreling around hairpin turns at 64 miles an hour?  Getting to design the vehicle you ride in.  That’s the premise of the re-imagined test track. You become an auto designer. Although the ride itself is basically the same, there are two different experiences during the pre-show. For fast pass riders, you choose a car to test. For Standby riders, you can actually design your car.
  • Splitsville: For those looking for something beyond theme parks, Downtown Disney added a new luxury bowling alley called Splitsville. It’s pretty glitzy too, not like Midtown Bowl where we normally go. It includes two levels of lanes, bars and restaurant including a sushi bar. Bowling balls even have Mickey on them.  Of course.

The next Field Trips with Sue segment (click the link to see the segment) was all about New Fantasyland. Disney has really gone back to their roots as premier storytellers and the New Fantasyland takes guest into the storybooks.

  • When Elephants Fly Be Our Guest Restaurant: This is my favorite new addition. It’s a replica of the Beast’s Castle. Walk across the bridge, past the gargoyles and through Iron gates. There are three main rooms where you can eat, the ballroom, which is where Belle and the Beast dance with gorgeous chandeliers and coffered ceilings, the forbidden West Wing, which is very dark and you can see the rose with pedals falling and the Rose Room where Belle and Beast dance on a music box. The castle makes you want to don a big yellow dress and dance with a beast! If you don’t want to eat at the restaurant, Disney offers sneak peak tours from park opening until 10 am.
  • Gaston’s Tavern:

    Fantasyland

Be sure to find Gaston when you visit Fantasyland. He’s the best new character and his Tavern is worth a peek, or even lunch. The LeFou’s Brew is a frozen concoction of apple juice and a hint of toasted marshmallow.

My second favorite addition is Gaston’s Tavern, and that’s because that’s where you’ll find the pompous, conceited and hysterically funny Gaston. He is by far the best new character at Walt Disney World. His Tavern is quite manly, decorated mostly with antlers. This is also where you can get a Le Fou’s Brew, which is Dinsey’s answer to the Harry Potter Butter Beer. The foam on top is really sweet, but the frozen apple juice concoction underneath is pretty good.

  • Dumbo: Parents of young children will love the new Dumbo ride. It’s now actually two rides, so the line goes twice as fast, which is a shame – because I can see kids crying because they want to stay in the queue. Now instead of waiting in a long hot line, you get a pager and let the kids play in a Dumbo themed playground with slides, and cargo nets. Best news for summer visitors, it’s also air conditioned!

Walt Disney World Fantasyland: Be Our Guest Restaurant

New Fantasyland

The Beast invites you to his Castle for quick-service lunch or a seated dinner. This is where I truly felt like part of the story. (Matt Stroshane, photographer)

What: Be Our Guest Restaurant
Where: The Beast’s Castle in New Fantasyland, Magic Kingdom, Walt Disney World
When: Quick Serve Lunch from 10:30 am – 2:45 pm
Seated Dinner 4 pm – (Reservations Required)

The additions to Fantasyland really make you feel as if you are falling into a storybook and the place I felt that most was in the Beast’s Castle. There are so many details that it’s hard to take it all in.

The Beast’s Castle is home to the Be Our Guest Restaurant. The restaurant offers quick-service from 10:30 am – 2:45 pm, then closes until 4 pm when it reopens for seated table service. This restaurant is as popular as Cinderella’s Castle, so expect a wait. A bit of a wait is worth it, especially for anyone that is a true fan of the Beauty and the Beast. Cross the bridge and enter through the iron gates into the story.

Walk across the bridge into the story. Attention to detail and richness of storytelling are hallmarks of Be Our Guest Restaurant. I love the gargoyles throughout the castle. (David Roark, photographer)

Sorcerers of the Magic Kingdom: Interactive Game Enhancements

Hero’s Wanted. That’s the advertisement for Sorcerers of the Magic Kingdom, an interactive adventure game throughout the Magic Kingdom theme park. Last time my family went to Walt Disney World, this was one of our favorite activities. It’s a great way to see the hidden areas of the Magic Kingdom and experience the park in a totally different way. Plus the cards are great collectable souvenirs.

Last week I was at the park picking up some new spell cards for the boys and noticed they now have t-shirts that give you an extra power boost. How amazing, not only are there trading cards that activate the game in each location, now your t-shirt gives you an extra boost! It’s kind of like armor made of breathable cotton. I am continually amazed at the innovation at Walt Disney World and the marketing savvy.

EPCOT at Walt Disney World: Re-Imagined Test Track

EPCOT

The sleek new “Chevrolet Design Center” at Epcot’s Test Track invites guests to create their own virtual custom-concept vehicle. Car designer wannabes get to shape their own virtual car, truck or crossover vehicle and learn how their design choices perform in changing terrain and extreme conditions against four attributes: capability, efficiency, responsiveness and power. The latest updates to Walt Disney World in Orlando are designed to slow guests down and create a more in-depth experience, immersing you at every turn rather than a frantic dash from ride. Test Track makes you the automobile designer, were you create, test, and market your vehicle. Here’s what you need to know to get the most out of your visit.

Five Ways to Wrap an Experiential Gift

Great American Days

Great American Days offers thrilling and unique experiences in a nice neat package.

What: Ways to Wrap an Experiential Gift
Where: Most experiential gifts you can order online, as well as a wrappable gift
When: For the Holidays or any gift giving occasion

I love to give and receive experiential gifts. The experience is something to look forward to after all the toys have been played with and forgotten, and the experience itself lasts a lifetime. However, an IOU isn’t too exciting to open. If you’re planning to give an experiential gift this holiday season, here are some ideas on ways to wrap an experiential gift to make it more exciting.
