Pinewood Derby Days at Lowes This Weekend

Lowe's Pinewood Derby Days What: Dremel Built for Speed Pinewood Derby Days at Lowes
Where: Any Lowe’s Store
When: Saturday, Feb. 2 and Feb. 16 | 11 am – 1 pm
Cost: Free

There are two reasons my sons want to do Cub Scouts, camping and Pinewood Derby. Can’t say I blame them. I remember the excitement of the race when my brother did Pinewood Derby. My parents keep giving me his old cars for the boys – thanks but we have a fleet of our own.

As an adult I love to see my boys excitement and watch them turn that block of wood into something fast. It’s also fun to pick out the cars an over-eager Dad built or the ones where the dad just admitted he didn’t have those Lowe's Pinewood Derby Daysskills. One year a dad convinced his kid to make the car a block of cheese. No cutting, they just drilled some holes in it and painted it yellow. For those who don’t have the skills or the tools, Dremel has a great website set up just for the Pinewood Derby with videos and car plans. In addition, they are offering demo days at local Lowe’s stores. They won’t build your car for you, but they will show you what to do and may let the kids try out the tools (even you big kids).

If your children like to build things, check out Lowe’s Build and Grow Workshop, which happens every other Saturday (but do require pre registration) or Home Depot Workshop, the first Saturday of the month (no reservation needed).

Shameless plug for the company that I work for (and our hometown company!)…The Home Depot also has free Kids Workshops each month. This Saturday (2/2) we have “Build a Valentine Holder” and next month (3/2) we have “Build a race car”. More info can be found at http://www.homedepot.com/workshops.

No shame in plugging another great workshop. I did link to it at the bottom of this post. My kids LOVE Home Depot workshop. At one time I could outfit a small army in little orange aprons. I will say Hal that Home Depot missed the boat on Pinewood Derby. Such a no brainer to get boys and dads (or moms) into the store.
