We were gearing up for the holidays this morning on CBS Better Mornings Atlanta. Time to Play showcased some of the hot toys for the season and on the Field Trips with Sue segment, we focused on Things to do with the family over the Thanksgiving holiday, showcased some fun holiday favorites and anticipated the arrival of all those holiday elves with a look back at what mischief they’ve caused in the past.

In our first hour of Field Trips with Sue on CBS Better Mornings Atlanta we talked about Holiday Activities in Atlanta on Thanksgiving.

  • The Macy’s Tree Lighting – This holiday tradition takes place Thanksgiving Night. A pre-lighting show features CMA Award winner Trace Adkins, The Voice finalist Chris Mann and Nickelodeon Star Cymphonique Miller beginning at 6:15 pm with the lighting at 7 pm and a fireworks display set to holiday music!
  • Ice Skating in Atlanta: If you’d rather get some exercise on Thanksgiving night, head to the ice rink. For an overview of the three ice skating rinks in Atlanta, so you can determine which one is best for your family, see our post on Ice Skating Rinks.
    • Centennial Park Ice Rink is scheduled to open on Nov. 19 (call first, if it’s been too warm, the ice may not be able to freeze)
    • Astor Ice Rink at the St. Regis opens on Nov. 21
    • Southwest Ice Rink at Park Tavern opens Nov. 22
The Rink at Park Tavern - Piedmont Park Ice Skating

The Rink at Park Tavern opens on Thanksgiving Day. While you’re there, enjoy Season of Magic in Piedmont Park with horse drawn carriage rides and a carousel. See our post on Ice Skating Rinks in Atlanta.

In our second hour of Field Trips with Sue on CBS Better Mornings Atlanta, we talked about Holiday Activities in Atlanta during the entire season, including:

  • Holiday Light Displays in AtlantaClick the link and you’ll see our updated list for 2012 of where to catch the best light displays, both paid and free. In our segment we talked specifically about
    • The Atlanta Botanical Gardens, Garden Nights, Holiday Lights. At the moment, this is my favorite light display because it has so much depth and you can walk through it or stop and roast smores by the fire with the lights all around.
    • Stone Mountain Christmas has lots of fun attractions, but I enjoyed just looking at all the lights. Each building is encased in colored lights.
    • Centennial Olympic Park has pretty lights throughout the park and is free!
  • Elf Mischief Ideas: An informal poll on Field Trips with Sue on Facebook shows that most holiday elves arrive the day after Thanksgiving. That’s quite a lot of mischief to get into between Nov. 23 and Dec. 24. We showed photos of what some of the elves have done in the past. For more ideas, head to the Field Trips with Sue Pinterest Page – Elf Mischief. If you have more ideas, tell us, or better yet, send us a picture and we’ll add it to the Pinterest Board.
