Tree climbing is a rite of passage for a kid. We have a japanese maple in front of our house that is the neighborhood climbing tree. Strategically placed branches let kids pull themselves up. But how many kids can say they’ve climbed to the top of an ancient oak tree without mom panicking below that they’ll fall. Here’s your chance to climb trees that remember when Atlanta was young.

Climb trees at the Dunwoody Nature Center’s popular Tree Climb Adventure on Oct. 13. This isn’t climbing trees like you might remember. Climbers are belted into a harness and use a pulley system to shimmy their way up the rope to the tree canopy. Once you get to the top, it’s a gorgeous view all around. The program is lead by Peter “Treeman” Jenkins and his team from Tree Climbers International. The founders of the sport of tree climbing will lead groups in two majestic oaks that date back to the beginning days of Dunwoody. Climbers must be at least five years old and have a reservation. Reservations will be taken through Oct. 11. Unreserved climbs will be available on a first-come, first-served basis on the day of the event.

In addition to the tree climbing, other activities around the park include nature trail walks, hanging out in the Nature Center’s Tree House or enjoying a picnic from home in the remodeled meadow. Admission to the center is free.
