Atlanta-born author Joanne O’Sullivan challenges your kids to a global scavenger hunt to see the 101 Places You Gotta See Before You’re 12?
Places like: a sculpture park, a big cave, a swimming hole, or a ghost town. You don’t need to travel way out west for a grand canyon. Georgia’s “Little Grand Canyon” is just a few hours from Atlanta at Providence Canyon State Park and Cloudland Canyon is an easy day trip. 101 Places You Gotta See Before You’re 12! includes types of places (a hall of fame, an old growth forest) and examples of those places in every region of the US. Kids can tick off their lists and rate their favorites with stickers

My daughter is 5, so I’d like to see what she should see before 12. We’ve been to a lot of places in GA, but as for our favorite place to visit…um, it would probably be Imagine it, Children’s museum of atl.
I like FTWS on FB
I tweeted:

Butterfly Center at Callaway Gardens – didn’t know it was possible to get my kids to stand still… They felt special to have a butterfly land on them.
The Silver Comet Trail is just a little slice of heaven
We love splashing in the Olympic Rings fountain.
Hiking with the family for an overnight to Len Foote Inn an eco friendly state park. They love seeing how the worms do their magic in the compost pile.
We like the Tellus Museum
I tweeted, too!
When my kids were young, we had a Zoo pass most years. You have to go to the zoo many times in order to really appreciate the animals and their behavior. The best time to visit—–during a soft shower. ALL the animals come out to play!

Jennifer, I totally agree. We had a zoo pass when my oldest was little and went almost every weekend. We saw some mightly strange things (including Giraffe’s mating – imagine that sight if you will). The drizzle is a good suggestion too. In addition to more active animals, it’s less crowded too! Thanks for sharing your great ideas.
these are great places. the Len Foote Lodge is on my list of places to go. My son pronounced a field trip to Tellus near his birthday “Oooo, A birthday present from my school!!” and I am reminded that we have not made our annual pilgrammage to Centennial Park to run around in the Fountains yet. Of course CMA and the Zoo are always favorites too and I’m dying to try out the Beltline as we has such fun on the Silve Comet. Thanks for the comments!
We discovered Wiggles Water World in White Water this year, and got a season pass because our 2 year old just LOVES it and all things Wiggles!
Many have mentioned the Zoo but Grant Park (which houses the Atl Zoo) is all quite wonderful & offers a great history lesson. They have lots of safe places to bike & huge shady trees which make it a perfect place to picnic. Cars aren’t allowed anywhere else in the Park besides the Zoo. Grant Park also has a newly renovated city pool (no annual pass needed) with a wonderful kiddie area & a few steps away is the best playground I’ve seen in a while!
We enjoy Fernbank
Our favorite is a kayak journey down our beloved Chattahoochee. Start at Morgan Falls Dam (which is pretty cool to see) and paddle down to Powers Island (or further.). Otters, turtles, snakes, fish, birds….so much to see and so quiet…except for some fun “rapids” if you can call them that.
The office building at 7000 Central Parkway has a beautiful man -made lake with a cement walkway that leads out to a platform with benches in the middle of the lake. Pretty cool, I thought. There are koi in the water, and small waterfalls, and my granddaughter enjoyed a visit there. You never know what you’ll find in Atlanta.
My kids and I found a great little water hole at stone mountain park this summer. They loved rolling up their pants and wading around in their shoes. It’s near the grist mill.
I follow on fb. BTW , we have a zoo pass and we love that too!
The Zoo, ImagineIt and the Botanical Gardens are all favorites, but I think the playground at PDK airport is a hands down winner. Not sure who loves hanging there more: my four year old son or my husband!
We Love the bicycle trails at callaway gardens!!!!!
My kids have a fun time taking Marta to the airport.
Wow! These are some awesome suggestions and some are hidden treasures. Elyse, what a great idea with the office building. High Heeled Mama – I’ve never been to PDK, but always hear such great things about it.
Our winner is Natalie Wills (her comment was on Facebook). She likes to take her kids to the Monestary in Conyers (another place I’ve never been!).
Congrats Natalie. Please email me your address so we can send your book (sue (at) fieldtripswithsue.com)
What a great idea. Would love to share this book with my two children.
