Winner: Kimberly Minter, you are the winner of the Mamma Mia! tickets. You may pick up your tickets at the Media Will Call. Email me at sue@fieldtripswithsue.com to let me know you can make it tonight.

The Circus is in town! I waited in the cold until midnight last night to see the Ringling Brothers and Barnum Bailey Circus train roll into town. I mean, how long does it take to go those last four miles! It was worth it (now that I’ve thawed). I met several great circus folks and got to see them unloading the elephants then walking them, holding tails, to their Atlanta home for the next two weeks. I’ll upload the video to the Field Trips with Sue facebook page. If you’d like to see it, check there later today. My day job is public relations and marketing. Ringling Bros. is one of my clients, so I’ve got a busy two weeks. I’ll also have access to a lot of circus fun. I’ll post the videos and pictures I take up on Facebook, so you can follow.

Tell me about your Circus memory. I’d love to hear about your favorite circus memory in the comment section below. If you’d like me to interview someone, tell me. If you just have a question for a clown – I’ll do my best to get it answered. I’ll start with a comment below about my favorite circus memories (and probably one of the reasons I love elephants so much.)

When my oldest was 2 years old and my middle son was a few wks. old, we went to the Ringling Circus. They had a FANTASTIC parade through Downtown with circus trains, elephants and all kinds of animals. My son was fascinated at the show and the baby slept the entire time (a God send when you’re trying to focus on a 2 year old who now has to compete with a baby brother.)It was the first time my husband and I had been to the show in years and it was by far the best show I’ve ever seen, mainly because we had a toddler that was incredible exited about EVERYTHING! We don’t ever buy things at shows, but we came home with the VHS (yes it was that long ago) Every time I fed the baby, my son chose the Circus to watch. In the video they showed Ringling’s Elephant Conservation Center. My little guy ALWAYS said in that cute 2 year old voice “we should go there”. Of course, you know me, I thought “we should go there”. FYI, the Elephant Conservation Center isn’t open to the public. I called and asked. He’d also always point out “look mommy, they’re hole-din tay-els.” So last night, as the elephants walked by all I could think was “look Nicholas, they’re hole-din tay-els.”

That is a cute story Sue! We have never been down to see the parade but it sounds awesome!
When my daughter was 18 months old my parents took her to the circus. It was winter and you know toddlers have a runny nose ALL winter. Well, my parents bought her some pink cotton candy. When they ripped off a hunk and handed it to her she wiped her nose with it! I guess to a toddler who has never seen cotton candy before it could look very much like a Kleenex!I laugh everytime I eat cotton candy now when I think about that.

Natalie, That’s hysterical! Bet she never made that mistake twice.

Does anyone know when / if the elephants will be walking through town in 2012?

  • Sue

Lyndon, they don’t walk through town. In the past they’ve done elephant brunches in Centennial Park, not sure if they’re planning that again or not.
