A friend of mine calls December and May the Mom Olympics. It’s the busiest times of the mom calendar year, followed closely by the end of August. Even with all the wonderful things going on in the city, there’s so much to do that sometimes you can feel overwhelmed with it all. My oldest suggested this season I do a Field Trips with Sue at home series and feature some of the ways we celebrate the season at home. I’d love to hear how your family celebrates too.
Field Trips with Sue at home: Count Down with Books
This idea has morphed from one I read in Family Fun years ago and has become a favorite for my boys. If your children are like mine, they have lots of holiday books. Over the Thanksgiving holiday we wrap each book like a present. This year we used newsprint as it’s pretty close to the right size for most books and eco-friendly. For the most part, these are books we already have but we’ll add to the collection as a Christmas present or tell relatives a holiday book would make a great gift.
Starting on Dec. 1st, each night one child gets to pick the book, one gets to hide it while the other two find it and the third unwraps the book once it’s found. Here are some of our favorite titles, some well known, others not so well known. I’d love to hear your favorite holiday books as we are always looking for a new one to add.
How the Grinch Stole Christmas!(of course)
The Christmas Thingy (although sadly, this is out of print)
Olive, the Other Reindeer
The Nutcracker
‘Twas the Night Before Christmas (AniMotion)
The Polar Express(ok, so this is one of my favorites.)
Cajun Night After Christmas(again, one of my favorites. Poor ole’ Boudreau, His wife she dun spent mo’ money den he know.)
