What: Smithsonian Museum Day
Where: 45 Museums in Georgia and more than 1200 across the country
When: Saturday, Sept. 26
Saturday, Sept. 26 is a busy day. In addition to the Free Day at Georgia State Parks, Smithsonian Magazine is celebrating the 5th Annual Museum Day by offering FREE admission to more than 1200 museums nationwide. There are 45 museums in Georgia participating in the program as of today. For a complete and up-to-date list, click here. Atlanta Museums include the High and Center for Puppetry Arts. You must register and print out an admission card on the Smithsonian Magazine’s site here.
Several of the museums offering free admission are on my list of places to visit or re-visit, including Tellus, the Northwest Georgia Science Museum, Booth Western Museum and Bartow History Museum in Cartersville. Cartersville is quite a cultural mecca for such a suburban town. Our family has loved Tellus since it was the Weinman Mineral Museum. Here is a post with video that I did earlier this year. Since then, Tellus has added even more interactivity to their gem panning and fossil dig. They have a downloadable Fossil Hunter liscence identifing what you can find in the fossil dig area and a Treasure Map that helps identify the gemstones in the gem panning area. Both of these sheets are more for older kids, but everyone will enjoy the activities.
We haven’t been to the Booth Western Art Museum yet. I hear it’s fabulous, even for kids. I’m told the Southeastern Cowboy Festival, slated for Oct. 22 – 25, is not to be missed and includes re-enactments of the Shootout at the OK Corral. We’re there.
