What: Free Day at the Parks
Where: All 63 Georgia State Parks and Historic Sites
When: Saturday, September 26
Cost: Free – No parking fee, no fishing liscense required, no fees for historic sites
I love the Georgia State Parks. This summer we have been fishing, swimming, frog catching, tree climbing, hiking, and more, all at Georgia State Parks. On Saturday, Sept. 26, you can shoot skeet, learn to canoe, pour iron and fish all for free during a statewide celebration at all 63 state parks and historic sites in Georgia.
Sponsored in part by The Coca-Cola Company and Verizon Wireless, the celebration includes dozens of family-friendly events and service projects. Learn to canoe and shoot skeet at Unicoi State Park’s Outdoor Adventure Day. Listen for owls on a night hike at Hamburg State Park. Try fishing in the Okefenokee Swamp at Stephen C. Foster State Park. Or watch molten iron become works of art at Red Top Mountain State Park’s harvest celebration. A full calendar of events is posted at www.Georgiastateparks.org/events.
If you’d like to avoid the traffic and stay overnight, Ga. State Parks offer a variety of accommodations from campsites to fully equipped cottages to hotel-style lodge rooms. The rates are affordable starting at $69 per night at the lodges and campsites are about $23 a night.
If volunteering is more your style, numerous volunteer projects are being coordinated by the non-profit Friends of Georgia State Parks & Historic Sites. To volunteer, call the coordinator at 404-656-6533 or the Friends group at 1-888-948-2092.
I’ve seen the Iron Pour at Red Top Mountain before and it’s really fun, but, I have my eye on the Skeet Shooting. I’ve always wanted to shoot skeet.
