5 Things to Do on St. Simons Island

What: St. Simons Island Village
Where: St. Simons Island, GA
When: Anytime
Cost: Varies by activity

If you’re looking to get away this holiday weekend, but still haven’t made plans and aren’t sure where to go, consider St. Simons Island along the Georgia coast. St. Simons is part of the Golden Isle of Georgia and offers lots of family friendly entertainment, in addition to the beach, that won’t break the bank. Here are five things to do near the St. Simon’s Island Village.

Crab or fish off the St. Simons Island Pier
Crabbing has always been on my son’s to do list when we go to St. Simons. We still haven’t figured out the best time to catch the crabs, but the boys love to lower the net and get excited when they catch anything. There are always serious fishermen around and it’s just fun to walk along the pier and see what everyone else has caught. We’ve spied hammerhead sharks, horseshoe crabs, rays and lots of different fish.

Brand New Swimming Pool
St. Simons has a brand new public swimming pool right next to the Downtown Village and right off the ocean. There is a zero entry for the little ones, a deep end for diving and a water play structure. A snack bar is conveniently located to the pool for lunch or treats.

Two Playgrounds
Right outside the pool is a new playground that offers lots of different structures. There is also another older playground off the pier that is fun and has a sandy floor, giving it more of a beach feel. Between the two is a lawn perfect for throwing a football or just relaxing in one of the giant live oaks. Tables under the oaks make it a great spot for a picnic lunch.

Mini-Golf
One the other side of the swimming pool is a brand new miniature golf course. It’s not the traditional mini golf with the windmill and other obstacles, but more of a smaller version of the Island’s standard golf courses. If you prefer a course with a windmill obstacle, head to nearby Jekyll Island.

Bike Riding
St. Simons Island has miles of bike paths and is a fantastic place to ride around. There are paths that wind around the airport where you can watch planes taking off and landing over your head, or through the village and along the entire length of Frederica Road. At low tide the beach has hard packed sand, so if it isn’t too crowded, you can also ride your bike along the beach and then wind up along the paths that go through the marshes of East Beach.

Thanks! We're heading to St. Simons next month. Can't wait to check out the pool.

Angie, Have you been to SSI before? If not, steal away a dinner for two at the Georgia Sea Grill. It's great and not very expensive. It's also tucked away, so you won't find it unless you know where it is. Depending on how long you go (and how much activity you want) check out my post on Jekyll Island as well. My favorite is the Tidelands Nature Center programs. The Turtle Center is awesome too.

Hi, we are coming to St. Simons next month. I have a 9 year old boy and a 16 month old boy. I am looking for things to do with them during the day while my husband is in meetings. Do you have any suggestions?

    Thanks!

Kasey, The 5 things to do on St. Simon’s is a great start. Also check out 5 things to do on Jekyll Island. http://www.fieldtripswithsue.com/2009/08/5-things-to-do-on-jekyll-island.html. Jekyll isn’t far from St. Simons and an easy drive. The beach is always a favorite for everyone. We like to get popcorn and sit on the top deck at Brogans. Cheap breakfast at The Sandcastle. The buffet is $1 for every year for those 5 and under.

Thank you so much for the information! I wasn’t sure what the weather would be like to hang out on the beach, but I would love to take them! I will check out the websites too!

Val, I don’t remember the exact costs, but do remember it wasn’t much. Here are some contacts that should be able to give you exact costs: For more information: St. Simons Island Chamber of Commerce, Neptune Park, St. Simons Island, GA 31522. Phone (912) 638-9014. The Links Miniature Golf, phone (912) 638-0305. St. Simons Island Casino Swimming Pool, phone (912) 638-2877.

Have fun. We love St. Simons. If you can take a night away from the kids, I highly recommend the Georgia Sea Grill. It’s tucked away but located in the downtown area. They have wonderful seafood and very reasonable prices. I’d also check out this post on nearby Jekyll Island. http://www.fieldtripswithsue.com/2009/08/5-things-to-do-on-jekyll-island.html
