What: Boneyard Beach aka Driftwood Beach
Where: Jekyll Island, Georgia
Cost: Free
We’re spending July 4 in the Golden Isles of Georgia. Jekyll Island is part of the Golden Isles and has lots of fun things to do, including one of our family favorites, “Boneyard Beach.” It’s called Driftwood Beach on the Jekyll Island map, but I prefer Boneyard Beach, it sounds more exciting and more accurately depicts the scene. The boys were amazed when they first saw the beach and had a blast climbing on the grey trees scattered about like bones. Everyone enjoyed looking at the weather beaten bark designs and learning a little about erosion.
Boneyeard Beach is a great place for pictures and there were lots of families snapping the holiday card photo when we were there. I also heard it’s a popular wedding photo place. A crisp white dress next to the greying oaks and water in the background, I might even be able to take that picture.
You must stop at the guard gate when you enter Jekyll and pay $3 to get on the Island. Ask for a map and look for driftwood beach, it’s on the north side of the Island. When you reach the convention center, turn left on Beachview. It’s easy to find, but don’t go down as far as the map says. Just past Villa’s By The Sea, there is a place you can pull off the road and follow the path down to the beach.
My oldest and I found boneyard beach while on a 5th grade field trip to the Jekyll Island 4-H Center. I can’t say enough about the FANTASTIC program. We learned a bunch and had a great time. Since we spend lots of time in St. Simons, this adventure gave us a whole list of field trips to show the rest of the family what we learned.Below are some additional photos too.
