What: Georgia State Parks and Historic Sites Pass
Where: Any Fulton County Library Branch
When: Whenever it isn’t already checked out
Cost: Free (when checked out with your library card)
I once heard that when raising children, it’s better to vacation at state parks, not theme parks. There’s probably a lot of truth to that statement. For Fulton County residents, the good news is the Fulton County library system not only has a Zoo Atlanta Pass for checkout, but they also have a family pass to any of the Georgia State Parks and Historic Sites for checkout.
The pass includes parking and admission for up to four family members to any historic site operated by Georgia State Parks, Recreation and Historic sites. Pass holders must show identification.
There are some fantastic programs planned this summer at all the state parks. Check out the website for the park near you. We used the pass to attend a kids fishing tournament at Panola State Park. The only thing we caught fishing was a turtle and lots of weeds, but the boys had a blast. We borrowed polls from the park and they even provided bait. In addition to fishing, the boys also participated in a casting contest, shot arrows from bows (I learned that two of my three are left eye dominant, meaning they’re really lefties) and my personal favorite, tree climbing. Yes, tree climbing, but not like you did as a kid, this is serious stuff. We had harnesses and had to shimmy up a rope. Panola State Park is the only state park in Georgia that offers tree climbing. They even have an overnight climb. That would be interesting. All of this was free the day we went, but there are normally nominal charges. Check out the pictures from our day.
