My uncle is a WWII veteran. One day, and I can’t remember how it came up, he told me a story about his time in Europe after VE day and how he had captured a Nazi soldier trying to cross the Alps into neutral Switzerland. I innocently asked how he communicated with someone who spoke another language. My sweet, soft spoken uncle looked me in the eye and said “You’d be surprised how well you can communicate when you have a gun in someone’s face.” I don’t know that I’ll ever forget that story.

Hearing veterans stories from the veterans themselves is quite different than reading them in a book or seeing a movie, even one as emotional as Saving Private Ryan. The Atlanta History Center’s Remembrance Day is a chance to thank those veterans for their sacrifices and learn their stories first hand. Veterans from World War II, Korean War, Vietnam War, and today’s conflicts will share their real stories of wartime through personal accounts and memorabilia. Living history interpreters share their authentic dress, equipment, and vehicles as men and women represent soldiers of the various wars.

While you’re at the History Center learn about the bloodiest conflict in American History, the Civil War. Turning Point: The American Civil War is one of the nation’s largest and most complete Civil War collections.
