What: Free Admission to The Wren’s Nest and Cyclorama
When: Cyclorama = March 15 and 22 Wren’s Nest = March 14 and 15
Why: Part of the Atlanta Preservation Center’s, Phoenix Flies Celebration
Cost: Free (but check the site for specific times)
The Atlanta Preservation Center is presenting the sixth annual Phoenix Flies celebration. This is an annual citywide celebration of living landmarks and includes more than 100 events, from guided walking tours (I’ve always wanted to take the Fox Theater tour), to lectures and open houses at dozens of Atlanta historic sites. All the events are free. You can see a complete listing here. Check the Phoenix Flies site for additional updates.
For many of the events you may want to grab a babysitter and go yourself, but there are a few that are especially kid friendly including free admission to The Wren’s Nest, home of Uncle Remus creator Joel Candler Harris and free tickets to the Cyclorama, a museum about the Battle of Atlanta.
The Wren’s Nest free admission is available on Saturday, March 14 and Sunday March 15. Tours are at 10:30 on Saturday and 11:30, 12:30 and 1:30 on Saturday and Sunday. Story telling is at 1 pm each day. If you’ve ever been on the water ride at Walt Disney’s Magic Kingdom, then you are familar with Uncle Remus’ Brair Rabbit and Brair Fox stories. Some of you may remember the Disney movie Song of the South, based on the Uncle Remus tales (and the basis for the ride). The Wren’s Nest is located in Atlanta’s West End.
The Cyclorama deal is offered to those that take the walking tour of Grant Park at 10 am on March 15 and 22. See the Phoenix Flies brochure for details. If you are unfamiliar, the Cyclorama is a civil war museum. The main attraction is a panoramic painting of the Battle of Atlanta. The Cyclorama also has civil war artifacts and a steam locomotive called The Texas, a veteran of the Great Locomotive Chase of 1862. The Cyclorama is located in Grant Park and shares parking with Zoo Atlanta.
