Hike to the Ruins

What: Sope Creek Paper Mill Ruins
Where: Sope Creek National Park
When: Any nice day
Cost: FREE, there is a $3 parking fee at Sope Creek and several others

Now that Spring is officially here, the weather is getting warmer and the days longer, it’s time to get outside. Try hiking at any of the many parks in and around Atlanta. We went to Sope Creek, in Marietta. There is a pond for fishing and lots of great trails for hiking or mountain biking. The best part is the ruins of Sope Creek Mill by the water. My kids had a blast playing army as we walked along, but they were thrilled when we “discovered” the mill ruins.

The Sope Creek Paper Mill produced much of the South’s paper from 1855 to 1902. The original was burned during the Civil War. The ruins are from the rebuilt Mill.

From the parking lot there is a three mile loop that includes the Mill. It’s not too difficult, but there are some steep spots. It’s a great place to bring the dog too. We used to take our basset hound; he probably loved it even more than the kids.
